Building Your Professional Image

Fine feathers make fine birds – we hear it very often nowadays. And it is actually true. People are constantly observing our behaviour and forming theories about us. Whether you like it or not, you do have an image. A positive professional image is essential to a successful career, no matter your age or industry you working in. Being a professional in your field is now more than just doing good work. The best way to create the professional image is first to be aware of the importance of it and the way others perceive you.

Professional image is the picture that people project about themselves based on appearance and reputation. To our professional image we include the way we speak, dress, interact with others, hold our body, and run our social media profiles. There are many factors which can improve our image. Below, in my opinion, are the top few must-know tips if you want to create a professional imagine.

Dress code

Dress codes are unwritten rules of getting dressed according to the occasion. What is the impact of dress code? It increases our credibility, improves our image and builds trust. Depending on the occasion we should choose the right dress code. Remember that you and your clothing should always be well groomed. Make sure that your clothes are not wrinkly and that they are pressed well. Dirty, torn, or frayed clothes are inappropriate. Keep your hair neat and your nails clean. Clothing with offensive terms is highly improper.

Moderation is required – with colours, make-up, perfumes and jewellery. Sense of aesthetics and balance of a good taste are crucial.

First Impressions

The first impression is an instinctive reflex that lasts just a few seconds. In such a short time we judge whether a person is trustworthy or not, or whether we feel safe in the presence of this person. We judge by appearance, body language and tone of voice. Body language plays a central role here. This image persists long and strongly influences our behaviour. How to make a great first impression? Always on time; remember about the appropriate outfit; use a positive body language; be confident and positive. As simple as that! Write it down because you will not get a second chance to make a first impression.

Positive Attitude at Work

Having a positive attitude at work, along with positive thinking, will make you a more productive employee. This can determine how others perceive you. Keeping a positive attitude at work can help you get a promotion, succeed on projects, achieve goals, or just feeling more satisfied at work. It is good to take care of that because your job is a big part of your life.

Professional Image on Social Media

Your profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter or other networking sites also play a role in your overall presentation. Any profile on social media is an extension of who you are. Be aware that everything you post can be seen by your employers, colleagues and your boss. It is worth it to do a search and remove anything that makes you look bad and unprofessional. It is good to realize that these days before hiring a candidate most employers are checking their social media profiles. What can be done to improve your online image? An appropriate profile picture is a must! Don’t be negative about work (bad move!) and think twice before you post.

We see ourselves as others see us. Your professional image is a key element that shapes your reputation. That is why you should take your time and try to improve your professional image. This is an effort you will not regret.
